wuthering heights: cast of characters

Mr. Earnshaw lives in Wuthering Heights with his wife and two children, Hindley and Catherine. Hindley is eight years older than Catherine. Ellen Dean (a.k.a. Nelly) is born the same year as Hindley and she works for the Earnshaws. Mr. Earnshaw adopts Heathcliff after finding him alone along the road back to his house. He doesn't know how old he is, but he is close in age to Catherine and they become friends.

Mr. Linton and Mrs. Linton live in Thrushcross Grange and have two children, Edgar and Isabella who are close in age to Catherine and Heathcliff. (Spoilers after the break.)

When Heathcliff, Catherine (Cathy), Edgar, and Isabella are in their twenties Catherine and Edgar get married as do Heathcliff and Isabella. Catherine dies giving birth to her daughter Catherine Linton (Young Catherine). After Isabella leaves Heathcliff, she has a son: Linton Heathcliff. Isabella dies and Linton comes back to live with his uncle Edgar and his cousin Cathy, only to be taken by his father Heathcliff to live in Wuthering Heights (and be miserable). Cathy and Linton become secret friends and make fun of Hareton who also is still living at Wuthering Heights - Cathy's cousin on her mother's side.

Mr. Lockwood is the tenant of Thrushcross Grange during the time the story takes place. Edgar has died by the time Ellen Dean tells Mr. Lockwood this tale. Joseph works at Wuthering Heights, takes Hareton under his wing after both his parents die for a time, and is very much in love with religion. Zillah is a maid at Wuthering Heights for a while before Ellen Dean eventually ends up there with Cathy.

Dr. Kenneth is the doctor who tends to Catherine when she is sick but also plays a minor role throughout the story whenever someone needs a doctor.

This is just a brief summary of who the characters are and how they are intertwined. A more detailed summary of the book is coming.
